Remembering Brian Richardson: A Rowing Legend and Inspirational Coach

It is with deep sadness that Rowing Australia announces the passing of Brian Richardson on Sunday, 15 September 2024. A towering figure in the world of rowing, Brian leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication that has touched countless lives, both on and off the water.

Born on 24 July 1947 in Adelaide to Max and Reen Richardson, Brian’s journey began at Prince Alfred College, where his passion for rowing took shape. He captained the school’s boats in his final years while balancing his love for Australian football. His rowing career flourished, culminating in a victory in the prestigious King’s Cup in 1979 and representing Australia in the Men’s 8 at the 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games. Brian’s versatility extended beyond rowing, as he also crewed on the 1983 America's Cup-winning yacht, *Australia II*, cementing his status as a sporting icon.

Brian’s influence was not limited to his success as an athlete. As a coach, he brought his expertise to athletes and teams around the world, serving as head coach for Australia and Canada, and holding key coaching roles in Denmark and South Korea. His ability to develop young rowers at the club and school levels was as impressive as his work with elite rowers on the global stage. His tenure as Chairman of Australian rowing selectors was a testament to his ongoing commitment to the sport.

Brian’s impact extended beyond the rowing community. For two years, he worked as a physical conditioner at Collingwood Football Club, including during their 1990 premiership season, embodying his deep-rooted passion for the Pies.

Brian leaves behind his beloved partner Suzie, and his children Tempe, Hamish, and Annabelle. He is also survived by his sister Diana, niece Jane, nephew Michael, and their families. A dear friend, mentor, and colleague to many, his absence will be felt across the rowing world and beyond.

Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Leukaemia Foundation or the NSW Cancer Council, honoring Brian’s generous spirit and lifelong commitment to helping others.

Brian’s life was one of remarkable achievement, dedication, and love for his sport and community. He will be missed but never forgotten, as his legacy continues to inspire future generations of rowers and athletes worldwide.
